What a great sushi spot! But for those who don't do the raw fish/sushi thing, they have a pretty good list of Hibachi as well! I came here the other day for my good friend's birthday, and I was sure to tell her she made an excellent choice. The exterior of the restaurant is pretty unassuming, but once you're inside, it's a beautiful japanese restaurant complete with a sushi bar, hibachi grill, and even traditional style japanese tables in the back! They have standard level tables up front, however with our party being a rather large one, we were seated at one of the long japanese style tables where you sit on a pillow. The decor was beautiful and intimate, and the pillow I sat on was more comfortable than I had thought it would be. (first time sitting in a restaurant like this) I ordered the crazy roll (shrimp tempura with spice tuna) and a regular shrimp tempura roll, and two pieces of salmon nigiri for my dinner with some edamame for an appitizer that I shared with my end of the table. The edamame was steamed perfectly, but it could have used a tiny bit more salt and could have a been a little bit hotter when it came out (I like mine piping hot at home... like, sear my mouth hot) but it still hit the soft spot I have with soy beans. Another of my friends ordered the crab rangoon, and it was pretty awesome. The sauce it came with complimented them perfectly! Someone at the table ordered the seaweed salad, which I bravely tried having never eaten seaweed by itself, and it was absolutely fantastic! I'll be sure and order that next time! I also tried a little bite of one the house salads that someone else got with their hibachi order, and the dressing was out of this world! On to my favorite part! The rolls were absolutely beautiful, I almost didn't want to eat them. But, my nearly empty stomach beckoned me to get on with dinner. Both rolls were superb! Crunchy cucumber and perfectly cooked shrimp with the perfect amount of rice! The tuna in the crazy roll could have used a little bit more sriracha for my taste, but it was the perfect compliment to the shrimp tempura. The salmon nigiri, as usual, was my favorite part (I can't get enough salmon!), perfectly rolled rice and a great slice of delicious, and super fresh salmon with the perfect amount of seasoning! The rolls were fairly priced, the shrimp tempura was either $5.50 or $6 and the crazy roll was only $7, and the nigiri was only $5 for two pieces. For dessert, we all tried their strawberry mochi balls. If you've never tried mochi, it's hard to describe - it's like a soft gummy texture, and comes in several different flavors. The mochi was wrapped around stawberry ice cream, and made the perfect ending to a great dinner! Our waitresses even surprised our birthday guest by turning the lights super low, and singing Happy Birthday as they brought in a piece of complimentary cheesecake with strawberry sauce! (she shared with everyone, and it was awesome!) All in all, this sushi place is worth a trip! While I hail from the Northland and still have my favorite place in Liberty (Moonlight Sushi - check it, and my review of it, out too!), this restaurant will be a great new option when I'm in the area!

This is my favorite sushi spot in KC! I've been here over a dozen times and have always had great service and AMAZING sushi. The Las Vegas rolls are delicious. I craaaavvve these rolls! I think I've sampled every roll they make and have nothing bad to say about any of them. However, the Vegas, Tiger, and Jun rolls are a few of my favs. If your a Sushi fan I highly recommend Juns..

What a nice surprise to head to an early dinner around 5:45 only to find out that happy hour goes til 6:30pm. We didn't even realize it until our waitress informed us that everything we had ordered was included in the happy hour (That's a good sign of a baller HH selection). I started off with an appetizer of wasabi dumplings (Shumai) and a bottle of Kirin. I also had my first Soybean Pocket (Inari) which was a sweet bread roll filled with rice, it was awesome. In addition to that we ordered some Spicy Tuna and Spicy Salmon rolls as well as a variety of sushi, all of which were good. Jun's is clean environment with a professional staff that offers a variety of seating (sushi bar, traditional Japanese, standard seating). I would like to try the traditional seating but don't believe my current level of flexibility will allow for it. I'll be coming back here again.

Definitely 5 stars based on Kansas City standards. The sushi here is more passable than other places in KC, meaning it's actually edible. On par with the local places by my parents, though much pricier here in KC. But that is the cost of not living by a sea. Anyway, the sushi was pretty good and this is now our go-to place when it comes to raw fish. We also tried a non-sushi dish - the udon. Tasty but could be more flavorful. What brings this up from a 4 star to 5 star are two things. First, as I mentioned, this place has some of the best sushi in the KC area. Second, our server was so super nice. And not like a fake super nice for tips. The boy and I can be a little klutzy (him more than I) and we both managed to spill a little sauce on ourselves (again, him more than me) and she saw us try to dab it out with water. Immediately she brought club soda and a towel to help dab it out and it worked! Now that's service! And this is the only restaurant in the whole KC-metro area to offer shabu shabu. Though I cannot vouch for how good it is and they only offer one flavor. But I will most certainly be back for the shabu shabu and rerate accordingly.

GRRR! Where did my review go? Is cookie monster on the loose eating my reviews? The staff / owners are Chinese and are extremely friendly and helpful. You can sit at a table or in a "hut" with your shoes off. It's semi-private, which the couple next to us took advantage of (I saw her on top of him making out for a minute). Awwww. Young love. The sushi here is the best in the KC Metro (we've tried a dozen places). Everything I've ordered has been quite good. Thanks to AMY G for bringing this fine restaurant to my attention. I had seriously given up on good sushi in the KC Metro till I found this place. It's part of a "strip mall" and has easy parking. They also sell Jewelry here, too. We enjoy the ambience. Of note, it can have a line and a lot of people, so you may want to call ahead first and see.

I could eat sushi for every meal. In fact, I'm pretty sure I had sushi every day last week. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that's entirely healthy. But let's go with it. For the past year and a half, my favorite sushi spot in KC has been Friends Sushi & Bento Box. I love how unassuming it is while serving some of the best sushi in town. (Plus their lunch bento box and Saturday lunch/Monday dinner specials are amazing.) But after moving out of Midtown and into Waldo, it wasn't quite as convenient to stop in for dinner or pick up takeout. Enter Jun's. Located in a cheesy strip mall with a giant HyVee, Jun's doesn't seem like much. But the inside is charming. You have your choice of "regular" tables or traditional tables in the back. I go for traditional because, hey, who doesn't like kicking off their shoes and sitting on pillows at a restaurant? The food at Jun's is excellent and I haven't seen (or tasted) fresher sushi in Kansas City. The eel (unagi) is the best in town. It's perfectly crispy and sweet without being chewy. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon are both excellent. The TNT roll (spicy tuna over a california roll) is delicious, as is the rainbow roll and caterpillar roll. The pieces of sushi are awesome too. The salmon (my favorite) came in a generous portion over rice. Ditto for the tuna. The house salad is awesome. It's nothing fancy - iceberg lettuce and shaved carrots, but the ginger dressing is magical. It really is. If they bottled it and sold it, I would probably buy it and then douse everything with it. Weird? Yes. But trust me. Get the freakin' house salad. My only "meh" moment came at lunch. The sushi lunch special ($10) includes two rolls of your choice from a limited menu and a house salad. But the sushi rolls included in the special are super heavy on the rice and really skimpy on the fish. A spicy salmon roll at lunch has about half the salmon as it does during dinner. But it's still tasty. Good sushi does exist in the Midwest. Go to Jun's. Immediately.

I am not sure there are words for how pleased I was. First, apparently they are only open until 2pm and then open again at 5pm. Well, unaware of that, we had planned to meet my parents for my birthday dinner, at 2:30. They were closed. The Chef, being a wonderful man, who believes their reputation is everything, was very distressed that the hours were not listed correctly and since we had each driven an hour to get there, offered us a private lunch. Was actually rather insistent that we come in for a private lunch. We did. *obviously we had EXCEPTIONAL service. But, the food was good and the sake' even better. I was born in the Japanese Islands and my mother and I both have keen tastes. We shared a wonderful plate of Yellowtail Sashimi. It was delicate in flavor and very good! All around, the soup was good, the rice was fragarant and sticky. The tempura dinners and the panko breaded pork were good choices. My husband said the Hibachi Steak was a little tough, but the shrimp was good. The Soba noodles were perfect. All in all it was a wonderful meal, made even better by their wonderful generosity!

If it had not been for the Yelp reviews, I would not have known to try Jun's, since I am not often in that area. It did not disappoint. The sushi chef really knows what he is doing. He even offers sushi rolled in cucumber sheets rather than rice, and he does it right. I haven't seen that before in KC, although I have seen sushi wrapped in radish sheets (daikon sushi). But I was a bit surprised, when the waitress seemed not ever to have heard of daikon sushi. Hey, but this is not Tokyo. If you don't know to look for Jun's, you won't likely see it, since it is in the back of a strip mall with a HyVee supermarket being the most visible business at the entrance. I had a few minor complaints (soup not hot enough, etc.), but on the whole I really enjoyed this restaurant and will be back.

Love this place!! Absolutely one of the best Sushi restaurants I have tried in Kansas City. The Sushi is very fresh and oh so yummy. The only down fall is that it might take some time to get your Sushi but they have some great appetizers while you're waiting, I myself love the Tempura Vegetables. They also have traditional Japanese seating in the back. They will normally give you the option on where you would like to sit. I prefer traditional. You can always sit at the Sushi bar as well, the Chefs are very friendly and will make anything you want. So if you are a Sushi lover like myself this is the place to go!

Having moved from California, where I could drive a bit to Japan-town, and get honest to god Japanese sushi, that is well prepared with fresh ingredients, I was more than hesitant to try "midwest" sushi. Jun's is very good. It comes very close what I would expect from any other authentic cuisine. They flavors are great, and they offer a nice selection of sushi, at a very reasonable price.

Having eaten @ Jun's once before, going into dinner tonight I wasn't really expecting to be blown away. We picked out some of our usual favorite rolls and ordered some tea. Just before we gave our Sushi picks to the waitress I noticed the Specials board and I was intrigued. I asked my wife if any of the four special roll looked good to her and without debate for either of us, we changed our order to all four of the Special rolls. I must say eating these four rolls has put Jun's on the top of my "Favorite KC Sushi Spots List". In Order of best to still really good we had: 1) Rock and Roll 2) Dancing Roll 3) Ocean Roll 4) Tempura Lobster Roll. If any of these specials make it on the the regular menu i will be ordering them again. Take a drive down, or up, State line and stop in @ Jun's for some great sushi soon.

I had given up on Jun's some time ago after they had changed ownership. At that time, the service and quality went way down from what it had been before, and I went from being a frequent regular to completely crossing this place off my list. But some time between the last disappointing trip and now (which is a large span of time!), things have changed for the better. I had a great experience here! The quality is back up! We went for lunch, and they have a great lunch special menu. I opted for a meal under ten dollars that let me choose two different rolls (I went for the shrimp tempura roll and the yellow tail and green onion roll--both were great) which came with the choice of clear soup or salad. It was fantastic! My husband's nabeyaki udon was okay. For some reason the waiter was confused about the difference between the yaki udon and the nabeyaki udon (both on the menu), so there was a delay, but really I wasn't a big fan of having all of chicken, beef, shrimp AND vegetables in one soup. But that many be an issue of personal taste. The hot tea was good and the decor was pleasant. The staff was friendly. Overall, 4 stars.

I am a converted sushi-eater. My first experiences of the stuff...let's just say...not so friendly, actually, borderline traumatic for a little girl with sushi-loving parents and grandparents and siblings. I won't go into the gory details. What I will go into, is how truly GOOD this sushi is: 100% authentic and simple and quality, every time I eat there with my sushi-loving family. The reviewer who scoffed at their prices and decor for not being a "trendy, cool, hip sushi joint" with "tasteful mood lighting," was just plain (how might I say this in a tactful way) wrong. The prices fit the bill for what is served and the atmosphere is very authentic. No, it's not LA. It's Japanese, and tasteful is every way, elegant and modest. You can take off your shoes in the private back room and sit on comfortable Japanese silk pillows at a low table where they serve you with fresh warm cleansing towels the minute you are settled. There isn't any tacky "trendy" music pumping and the servers are very respectful to the table's conversation and never intrude for the sake of their own tip with any loud personalities. Jun's is the first sushi restaurant in town and has won so many awards for it! There is no denying that Jun's is THE PLACE to get sushi in Kansas City, if you know your sushi. I don't like to play it too safe here either, especially because everything made tastes somehow so amazing. So I go for it: the eel is barbecued to perfection and sashimi all the way. They're salad is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the meal (there are so many), served with the freshest of vegetables and their signature ginger dressing...I think I might take a short break while writing this review to eat some...it's only right down the block from me! The sushi boats, although expensive, serve a great selection of sushi for first timers to really grab a taste of everything. And if you're not a sushi lover, the teriyaki steak was my staple before I switched to the sushi, and it's so good I often struggle still when I sit down to the menu about which to order, sushi or steak or BOTH! (One of these days...when I'm ridiculously hungry...you can find me at Jun's eating sushi and steak.) After I leave Jun's, I always feel healthy and satisfied - like I don't need to be rolled out of my booth through the exit and into the car because the meal is NOT heavy. It's sushi, I'm a fan and was made more so because of the care and quality of Jun's. Did I say I liked sushi? Hah.

Kansas City is known for Beef, but not Sushi. So you have to lower your expectations and take the few choices that are offered locally. So that is why I picked Jun's Authentic Japanese Restaurant. It turns out this was supposedly the first Authentic Japanese Restaurant in KC, starting about 20 or more years ago. The decor and furnishings are Authentic Japanese Restaurant. The wood plank menu on the wall behind the sushi bar is Authentic Japanese Restaurant. The name Jun's is Authentic Japanese Restaurant. And perhaps when this place first opened, it was Jun's Authentic Japanese Restaurant in a nice subruban neighborhood of Kansas CIty. But it is Chinese owned and operated. All the people working here speak Mandarin. The sushi chef is from Taiwan. The waitress is from Shanghai. But don't hold that against Jun's Authentic Japanese Restaurant. Despite the lack of Authentic Japanese, the sushi isn't bad. It is very acceptable. They also have a decent Sake list. They even have good edamame too. The service is good and the prices aren't outrageous, although they aren't the cheapest either. Hey, it costs money to keep Jun's Authentic Japanese Restaurant Authentic Japanese without any Authentic Japanese!

This was my first time at Jun's and I was very impressed. I had the Sesame chicken with udon noodles. Excellent noodles, tasty chicken and amazing flavors. We also had the California rolls and Philadelphia rolls. They were very tasty as well. The place was incredibly clean and the staff were great. We had excellent service. The only drawback was the table of screaming 7 year olds two tables over. However, that was a parenting problem, not a Jun problem. We are definitely going back for more.

Man do I love Jun's. Every time I come and eat here it is wonderful! Love the sushi most of all, but everything else off of the menu I have tried is great. The fish is really fresh and of a good quality and their sushi rice is good (I hate it when it is too vinegary or dry). I would recommend Jun's to anyone craving sushi in the KC Metro area.

A recent visit to Jun's was excellent in every way. We simply chose the chef's special selection of sushi and sashimi and were not disappointed with the selections. Service was prompt & courteous. We'll return soon!

I've been to Jun's a few times and think it's pretty darn good! Sushi is pricey, in general, so I don't think their prices are horrible. The Rock & Roll Sushi roll is very good! If you order a few rolls, they come on a "boat" which is always entertaining.

Okay, I KNOW I got totally spoiled in Cali when it comes to sushi; but before I left Jun's was my favorite sushi in KC. WHAT HAPPENED? On our last visit the rolls were the same price as always, but had paltry amounts of the fillings. The rolls where smaller than most on an "all you can eat" sushi buffet. I was so disappointed that I fear they must now be crossed off my list. Many may disagree, but I'm not paying that much for that little. Jun's, you need to stop skimping or lower your prices.

i should love this place. it's the place where i had my first date with my now husband. it was good then. but that was 4 years ago. we went back. expecting it to be great. the romance. the memories. the sushi. it wasn't . bad nigiri. bad rolls. over-priced. just bad, bad, bad. we'll stick to domo, thank you.

I went here for lunch and ordered the katsu lunch bento box and an eel sushi roll. I guess they misheard me and brought out a teri chicken bento, but they quickly fixed my order. The bento was a nice size and I could have had my fill with that only. No complaints on the sushi or the service. My only complaint was that it was a bit pricey than what I'm used to.

I've been going to Juns Japanese Restaurant since the mid 1990's and this has been my favorite sushi restaurant in the Kansas City area. I mainly order the sushi/ nigiri and it always taste great. Another favorite is the unagi/ or ell dish. The teriyaki chicken is another favorite of many of my friends and family. You know you go somewhere too many times when the staff knows you by face. May is one of our favorite waitress there, she's just awesome. I highly recommend this place if you love sushi.

  • Andria N.

Jun's is by far the best sushi in KC. Yes, I did give it 3 stars, but 3 stars does mean A-OK! There was a limited selection of sushi rolls and it seemed everything else was a variation of a califormia roll.

    (3)
  • Les K.

Other yelp reviews of this place laid down expectations that this place failed to live up to. One thing right off that was mentioned by others is that it is expensive. At first when I saw the prices for simple nigiri sushi rolls it seemed like a bargain. To my surprise when I learned from our waitress that they were by the piece and not as a pair as is pretty much universal as all sushi restaurants I have ever been to (hundreds as this point), I quickly had to re-appraise my view and conclude that in fact they were now at one of the most expensive sushi restaurants I have been to. I almost think their by the piece pricing is deceptive and clearly designed to throw off seasoned sushi lovers from doing apple to apples price comparisons when you have to do math to every item. Across the board the pricing for everything from drinks to other rolls was at a premium. Now if this place was some trendy, cool, hip sushi joint with an elegant interior, tasteful mood lighting, with colorful patrons and servers along with some interesting music in the background that can make for that all so perfect sushi experience then their prices might be justified, but in fact the experience is really not special at all. The front entry bar area and the sushi bar are OK, nothing to write home about, but the main dining room is just plain boring and utilitarian at best. They did have some cool looking screened off rooms in the back that looked fun but why they missed the boat on the main room is beyond me. Further marring the experience was our waitress who while being technically proficient in her duties really exuded an attitude of wanting to do anything but serve people in a restaurant. The place was not really that crowded so it was even more so noticeable. I don't need fawning all over me but checking the disdain at the door would be nice. The final component of disappointment was the quality level of the sushi was inconsistent at best. Some of the rolls were quite tasty and fresh and others missed the mark by a lot. For example the rainbow roll had way too much avocado on it and it was overly ripe making for a mushy texture that was very unappealing. I also found the tuna to be lacking. It had great texture and color but it was completely lacking in any taste. Zero. Zippo. Nada. Sort of like what they do to tomatoes where they appear red ripened but have no taste. When you can't get great tuna at a sushi restaurant then you know there is a problem.

One of the best sushi restaurants I've found in KC. Tucked away in the corner of small shopping center, its storefront appears understates their extraordinary sushi. If you visit once, you'll be back.

  • Shawn H.

This is Sushi. It is the oldest in KC and the freshest. More expensive than the others in town, but you get what you pay for. I go here so often the sushi chefs know me very well. Full menu for cooked dishes like Tempera and Udon noodles, etc... I usually go sushi all the way. Some special treats, and my favorites are amaebi, sweet shrimp. They take a prawn serve the body, raw, on sushi rice and deep fry the head which is served separately in a bowl. Eat the head! as we say or you're not a real sushi eater. Uni with a quail egg is another treat. Don't forget salmon skin handrolls. I love the place. It gets noisy on Friday nights with inconsiderate business men but other than that it's great. Takes reservations only at the tables. Sushi bar is first come first served. UPDATE April 2008 Sadly, the cheap bug as bit Jun's too. Now even at the sushi bar we're forced to fill out our own meal ticket. This tactic has been employed by many sushi restaurants. It is impersonal and tedious. It feels like paperwork. I don't want to work. I want to talk and bark out sushi orders. This combined with the lack of personal relationship with your sushi chef ruins any experience at the bar. Prices have went up significantly too. I have found our cultures are very, very different. There is a strong Oriental trait for efficiency and too often pricey Oriental restaurants promote efficiency in lieu of personal experience or inviting atmosphere, which is very important to Western diners. It would help to familiarize with Midwest dining expectations and assimilate to these expectations. You know, it is not customary to tip in Japan nor in many oriental countries however sushi bars have assimilated to this philosophy very well.

Best sushi in KC hands down! Also, GREAT happy hour. 4:30-6:30 Mon-Thurs.

Fresh tasting, and consistent. Which shouldn't be too much to ask for at a sushi place, where there is a fine line between outstanding sushi and cat food. But its the best I've had in this area. And I'm not the type that can eat sushi everyday. Not that I don't like it, but its not a food I can just indiscriminately gorge myself on. And, unfortunately, I have a severe taste for the sashimi (monkfish liver, fatty tuna, sea urchin, etc...) over the rice coma-inducing rolls, which makes eating here regularly a little too expensive.

This is my favorite place to get sushi in the KC area. If I were back home in NYC I would have higher expectations, but Jun's is by far the best sushi I've had in Kansas City. Sure the decor and ambiance are lacking, but the service is fast and friendly and the food is great. I don't quite remember which rolls we had, but they were all fresh and delicious...we also had some really good shumai. We weren't as pleased with the chicken teryiaki, which was a little rubbery, but we will be back again soon.

After seeing all the rave reviews of this being the best sushi in town, I suggested this place for this month's Dinner Club. What a fail! My daughter and I ordered off the Happy Hour menu because we really just wanted to try the sushi. We got the shrimp tempura, spicy crab, dynamite, sea bass and white tuna. We like sauces and if its good, we drench everything in sauce. None of our rolls had sauce. We tried eating the rolls without to see if the rolls had enough great flavor to hold its own without sauce...and well...it didn't. It was all incredibly bland. We asked for some spicy mayo and eel sauce to help, but even the spicy mayo wasn't very good. I added some wasabi and eel sauce to it and then we were able to finish the rolls. We had a large group of 11 people so there was a variety of food. Some other items that were ordered were squid salad, gyoza, crab rangoon, baked mussels, stuffed mushrooms, agedashi tofu, yaki udon (shrimp was better than chicken), tenzaru soba, tempura udon, salmon dinner, and chicken katsu. I don't think anyone enjoyed their food, everything was just edible. I am still so embarrassed to have suggested this place. I would probably give this place less stars for the food itself but the service and actual restaurant were nice.

We thought wow all these really good reviews, the food has to be good. Wrong. We were so disappointed with the food here. We had a big party and we got to sit in the back private room where you take your shoes off. Kinda fancy I guess. It was happy hour until 630 and we took advantage of it. Crab Rangoon, edamame, spicy crab roll, baked mussels. Let's rank those from best to worst. Roll, Rangoon, mussels, and then edamame. The mussels order came with four and it really didn't taste right. It didn't come hot or even warm. It was missing some flavor. Bad all together. The best baked mussels are from sakae sushi in parkville. Now the edamame had a worm in it! I almost ate it but stopped short of it entering my mouth. We told the waitress who just said "wow". The waitress gave us a new one and didn't even take it off the bill. Photo of worm is attached. We also orders entrees from the menu. I had the yaki udon with shrimp which had flavor but like the wrong kind of flavor. Was not good. We also had the chicken katsu which came with rice and soup and salad. And although the chicken itself was nice, the sauce it came with was too sweet or something. It didn't mesh well with the chicken. With all these great reviews I expected the food to be on point with no hiccups. I won't come here again. Drinks are on HH all day so if I were to come here again it would just be for a drink.

We've heard lots of great things about Juns. Figured we'd try it for a special occasion...my wife's birthday. Our family went this evening. Ordered a combination of sushi and hibachi. Appetizers of tempura shrimp and vegetables were fine. As were the pan fried pork dumplings. The sushi was ok. A couple of the rolls were very good, and a couple were disappointing. Our hibachi meals were very disappointing. The flavors were good. The vegetables were good too. But the meats - - steak, shrimp and chicken - - were all cold. Overall, the food was just OK. I don't think we'll be rushing back anytime soon.

One of the best experiences I have ever had with trying a new sushi place! We told our waiter to tell the chef to make his 4 favorite rolls. Each was better than the last and the drinks we ordered were made perfectly!

Excellent sushi rolls. Everything was good. I think the dynamite was my favorite. The spicy tuna is spicy... In a good way. I'll return

Very nice sushi bar, with about a dozen seats, plus tables in the back. Chefs were not particularly chatty, but were friendly enough. I ordered the California roll + 7 piece combo, which was a nice sampler... all of the fish was very fresh. The layout of the restaurant helps cut the noise, too, so this would be a good place for conversation with your date.

My wife is a huuuuge Hello Kitty fan so for her birthday this year I tried to make it as Kitty-licious as possible. The icing on the birthday cake occurred at Jun's. A few days prior to the day I went in and talked to the crew there and showed them a pic online of a Hello Kitty roll. They gladly accepted the challenge and man oh man did they go above and beyond. They made a huge plate of rolls with Kitty's face in them (see pic) for my wife. Freaking awesome! We always loved the food at Jun's and really liked the people who work there but this night further solidified how good the people are who work there. They are family who treat their guests as their family.

Not Japanese! Hell, not even Korean. More like Chinese buffet type sushi. I'm not sure if the rice or the fish meat was not fresh. My family and I were very disappointed with our low quality sushi that we ordered. I could have gone to a Chinese Buffet and gotten the same quality if I wanted this type of sushi. In addition, the waiter/host that took our order didn't write our order down and brought out the wrong order for one of our rolls. I didn't bother complaining since the other sushi rolls were bland as well. Hence, it is a lost and to say I will never be coming back is an understatement. It is why I had to write this review to warn others to not waste your hard earn money. I believe that this is a Chinese owned sushi establishment and not a Japanese. Heck, if it were Korean it'd be better. Two stars for edible, however not tasteful for the money spent.

The most consistent sushi restaurant in all of Kansas City! I always highly recommend this place to any visitors and or friends. We have dined at Juns for over 10 years and I've loved every moment of it. Last night was my first rough experience... As a table of one I had to wait over an hour for my food. Management did I apologize multiple times and ultimately made it right. If you want a guaranteed fresh sushi option... Here is the place to go!

I have been hearing so many good things about this place so I knew I needed to eat here some day. Well that some day happened and was such a huge disappointment. I think I enjoy sushi from the grocery store more than what I ate here. Definitely won't be recommending this place to anyone I know!!

Very good Sushi with great service. Had the spicy tuna, spicy salmon and salmon nigiri and it was all good! !

Jun's had been in Kansas City for longer than people realize (I've been coming here since the early 80's). This is one of the best sushi joints in town. The chefs are amazingly friendly and their fish selection is top notch. They have their dedicated regulars that eat here often. Can't go wrong with choosing to have the best sushi in KC here.

Staff was very nice, slight misunderstanding on my part but very professional and genuine. Baby octopus salad had good balance of acidity and sweetness. Soba was decent, needed alittle more flavor in boiling liquid (salt or soy) but overall good. Tempora was fried perfectly, not greasy. Unagi roll was incredibly sweet didn't really taste eel, just sweet soy. I'll be back, hopefully they'll fix these minor issues.

We've been going to Jun's for at least 10 years. They did a "bar refresh" about 4-5 years ago but other than that there's nothing fancy inside or out (if you compare the ambience to Ra or Kona Grill). With that said, the food and staff are terrific. They make you feel right at home and sushi chefs are some of the best in the city. We go at least once a month, tend to do take out 80% of time but I would highly recommend Jun's!

We are huge sushi fans and have tried most sushi places in Op And surrounding areas. We keep coming back here cause it is just darn good. Rangoons are the best and I love the Chiefs roll. We have eaten here at least a dozen times ands it always been good

Tonight was our 1st at Jun's and it definitely won't be our last! Some of the best sushi in KC and we have tried most of them. We loved the Magic roll best out of the 5 we tried, but it was a close race, we couldn't agree on the rankings after number 1. The saki was hot, the service was pleasant, restaurant was clean and filled up quickly. A must try for sure.

There is a real need for an improvement to call this as an authentic sushi or yakitori. First, the sushi rice really need to match with the neta. The neta are dry. There is a much better quality sushi fish that can be used. There is a total imbalance of the taste. Yakitori, is not grilled, this is not yakitori at all. If this is really grilled, then there is something wrong about the grilling technique. I am sorry to say this but if people are thinkng that this is a high quality sushi or authetic Yakitori, there is a very serious issue of the scale that is applied to critique Japanese food.

Mediocre in general, but for KC its one of the better options you have. A quick, easy, casual decent option. Its overpriced for what you get, but like I said this is one of the better options in KC. If you are looking for a step up, try Sushi House in Leawod. I think the happy hour and take out options here are great at Jun's though. I do continue to eat here and its consistently fine.

Great sushi, friendly service, fun atmosphere. If your socks don't have holes in them, try and get a tatami table. I think this is truly where the magic happens. Tosa is my favorite appetizer here. I can never quite get enough! I had fatty tuna sashimi here that changed my MF life I tell you! The spider roll here is also very tasty. This is a great place for a casual date or a family night out.

Class act. We sat in the back room, at our own long table, shoes off, on pillows. Walked on the pillow bench to get to the other side of the long table. I was there for a going away party. While we were there, a guy in the next table hut had a birthday. The lights went low, and the we and the staff sang happy birthday to him. They bring out home made cheese cake. I don't like raw fish, but there are tons of options on the menu. I ordered tempura stuffed mushrooms. They are stuffed with shrimp, crab and avocado. The mushrooms come with a sweet and sour type sauce. Another member of our party had barbecued eel, which I tasted. I'd never had eel before, but it was actually pretty good with a light fishy taste, but seasoned throughout. I had a chicken and noodles entree. The entree had noodles that were similar to low mein, but were thicker, and I think made there. It had a garlic sauce on it, and large pieces of carrots. I would totally order that again. Someone else got a vegetable tempura that was delicious. For dessert, I chose green tea ice cream. I'm not going to explain it's goodness, I don'[t have to. The person next to me order tempura bananas, oh my goodness, they were delicious as well. One of the women in our group told the staff that it was my friend's birthday, so we got the full treatment...lights turned down low, and a piece of cheesecake. The staff was very nice, even switched someone's order at the last minute to something else. There's plenty of options for everyone, meat eaters, vegetarians, those who don't eat raw fish....and the presentations were pretty. The tuna (I think it was tuna) was rolled into a rose shape. I will stop in again when I'm in the area. Very delicious.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who is craving some delicious sushi. I have been coming to Juns for over 10 years and have never once had a bad experience. The staff is great, the service is quick, the food is fresh and fantastic. My absolute favorite item is their shrimp tempura roll- it is so savory. Also, check out their happy hour and lunch specials-- they are well worth it!!

Probably the worst Japanese food I have eaten. My coworkers and I had hibachi entrees. Not disgusting, but bland and overcooked. The salad was good. Avoided the sushi just due to the location; far from the ocean, in a shopping center/strip mall. The service was poor as well. The waiter literally ignored us. I genuinely think he was having a bad day. All in all, we went to Wendy's on the way back to the hotel.

Solid sushi restaurant, especially for the Midwest. Many times these "strip mall" sushi restaurants are questionable, but not here. Food was tasty and fresh. Service was very friendly. Prices are reasonable. I'd head back anytime.

For my friend's birthday, she opted to celebrate at Jun's during happy hour. We both have been there several times, sometimes for happy hour, sometimes for regular dining. We started off with mango martinis, gyoza and crab rangoon. Both were fine. The sushi, however, was not as good. I'm not sure if they pre-make some of their happy hour rolls, but the spicy tuna didn't taste fresh. Also, this will sound weird, but the soy sauce tasted a little tangy, not normal. I can't pinpoint it, but the taste made me wonder if they were re-filling the bottles with a cheaper brand, or perhaps it was old? I don't know. Usually I am a soy sauce junkie, but not this time. Our server was nice but a little slow. I have had great experiences at Jun's, but I think it might be going downhill a little, or perhaps it's just happy hour.

Somewhere along the line, several years back, sushi because so trendy. It's so easy to tell the places that care about the image *cough RA cough* and the places that want to serve good sushi. That's the main takeaway I got from Jun's. It's simple, nice, quality and delicious sushi without any pretense. I tried the Spicy Tuna, as well as the "Chiefs" role that was a bit more decadent. Both were excellent, and were as good as I've had in a long time. They also wrap up the meal with half of an orange and an Ande's mint, which, yes, is a small perk but it really wrapped it up nicely. I asked our waitress about the cool room off to the side that has pillows to sit on and dim lighting and she said it's usually open on the weekend. If I were making a reservation there I would definitely request that area.

I went here last night because I was craving some Asian fare, and they happened to be open later. I was hoping for Kokoro Maki House... but sadly they close at 9:00. The staff was super nice. There wasn't anyone there, so the service was fast. But, I think the sushi was a little lacking... in substance, in flavor...just very general blah. I don't like a lot of fried or sauce covered sushi. Which, maybe some other reviewers prefer and thus, the high ratings. Drunken Fish, Friends Sushi and Bento, Kokoro Maki, and Sushi Train (Sakura)... all on the top of my lists.

Yum, yum and yum. Starting this off with 'I'm not a sushi fan' would be ridiculous but I'm really not. Everything at Jun's is fantastic. So yummy. I agree with many other reviews in which people want to go here as often as possible. Same here. I'm in. Edamame is addictive, best spring roll and dumplings in town. Only place I will eat sushi...I order the above items for a meal and then steal sushi from what my husband orders.

Clean, simple decor, beige. Very beige. It is prairie village after all. It looked busy when we walked in, but as soon as they figured out how to seat the large group in front of us, we were seated very quickly. Ordered fast, very attentive waitresses, but slow on the sushi delivery. It was a roll night for us (that is usually our first test of a new sushi place). We got the Paradise roll (great), tempura lobster roll (very good) and double trouble roll (no flavor at all, overwhelmed by a quick dip in soy) as well as another one or two that I forgot to note the name of. Delivery time on rolls is a little brutal, easily 30+ minutes with the restaurant 1/2-3/4 full. We're still in search of the ultimate KC sushi, but you know, it is sushi in KC. This place isn't bad though I don't know if it lives up to the hype as the best i town.

I always want to go to Jun's for sushi. I don't have to be in the mood for it. Just ask me for sushi and I will invariably say one of two things: Jun's? Nara? I know one is traditional and one is that fusion stuff but they both have their merits and Jun's is helped by their lovely sake selection. I'm down for a spicy tuna roll whenever, and equally so with their volcano roll. The rolls are big and none I've had were anything less that great. In fact, this was the first tamago I could ever get on board with.

I came here with a couple of friends as well as some new ones. We were in the back area where we had to take off our shoes to sit down. It wasn't that bright but bright enough to read the menu (at least for me). The staff were Chinese because one of them came to our table and asked one of us if he spoke Chinese or not. lol She was helpful when some of us had questions about items on the menu (particularly what was in Sushi A and Sushi B). I ordered the Beef Nabeyaki Udon ($11) and a Spider Roll ($9). I don't remember exactly what everybody else order but I knew there were a few Sushi A ($17) and one Sushi B ($22). The Sushi A came with 1 California Roll plus 8 pieces of sushi while the Sushi B came with 1 Shrimp Tempura roll plus 10 pieces of sushi. I took pictures of them so you can differentiate between the two. It took a pretty long time for our food to come out and it's because they were probably preparing everything so everybody would get food at the same time. I took a picture of the food that almost everybody got and I can't remember the name of one of them. My Beef Nabeyaki Udon was hot in terms of temperature but really good. I was pretty much sweating when I was eating. lol I even added some of that spicy peppers in that little bottle. It was a great complement to the soup! The Spider Roll tasted alright, but I know I've had something better than that. The food was alright for the most part but I wouldn't mind coming back to try their Hibachi food.

Not sure if I can provide any new insight to Jun's. Perhaps just reaffirm what others have said. The Decor--as Beth P mentioned is clean and simple. They do have two different sections: tables and booths that are segregated in their own section. They'll greet you with hot towels which I enjoy, but not really necessary. The food is pretty good. The fish is fresh and you can find your standard rolls as well as the "Kansas City Roll" and "Las Vegas Roll." They cater to young kids very well. Our server engaged our 3 year old and they do have a kids menu as well. However, the service is a bit slow and while the sushi is pretty good, I can't call it amazing by any means.

I love sushi but the night I tried Jun's all I wanted was teriyaki chicken/shrimp and rice. I ordered that, my boyf ordered chicken/steak...both were mediocre, luke warm. His steak tasted cold and hard. I was thinking it would be cooked in teriyaki, however it just had a cold side of the sauce. The restaurant is definitely overpriced; I would understand the prices more if it were like a Japanese Steakhouse sitting around the grill and you're paying for the experience. The best part of it my boyfriend said was his margarita. I would go back to try the sushi but definitely not what I ordered.

Best Sushi in KC Metro. Lunch deal great, any 2 rolls for $9.95. Sit at the counter. Tip the Sushi guys with cash. They deserve it. Fish flown in daily. Client for 28 years. Started with Jun himself out at 103rd.

Wow, found our new spot for sushi for sure. I take my two small well behaved children with me and some places look a us like were contagious when we bring our children. They were sooooooo nice and not only was the food top notch but the service was really really good. We will be back soon. It was nice to go to dinner and get great service and even better food.
